Volunteer Spotlight

Name:

Jessie

A bit about myself:

I went to an arts high school where I studied drama and then I studied for 3 years at the WA Academy of Performing Arts, studying Stage Management and Festival Management.

My volunteer role at AWESOME:

I was a Festival Assistant for most of the Festival and then led 2 school tour groups towards the end. At first I wasn’t sure about volunteering for the school tours, but as I spent more time at the festival and my confidence grew, I knew it would be a great role for me.

My reason for volunteering:

At WAAPA we had a class taught by Jenny Simpson where she showed us some things about the AWESOME festival and what it takes to make it all run. I had always wanted to find out more, so when a friend of mine posted on Facebook about volunteering, and asked if any of us wanted to volunteer as well, I jumped on the opportunity!

Favorite volunteering memory:

My favourite volunteering memory would have to be the day I spent with artist Calvin Chee, making rice sculptures. It was a very fun day, seeing the creativity of the children and getting to unleash my own creativity as well. The other team members on the day were fantastic and we all got along really well. I had an amazing time at the 2016 AWESOME Festival and I will be back again this year!

What have you been up to since volunteering in 2016?

Since my time at the AWESOME Festival I have had 2 jobs in the field I love! These include working with Black Swan State Theatre Company as an Assistant Stage Manager for their production Endgame. Endgame was a fantastic play with a wonderful cast and crew. This was a wonderful opportunity for me and I’m sure my experience at the AWESOME Festival helped to secure me the jobs.

Grace

A bit about myself:

I’m currently studying a Graduate Diploma of Secondary Education and look forward to working in education next year. In my spare time I like reading fiction, eating burgers, and befriending cats.

My Volunteer Role at AWESOME:

Festival Assistant & School Tour Guide 2014, Team Leader & School Tour Guide 2015

Reason for volunteering:

The community values of the AWESOME arts festival is what attracted me to volunteer. I wanted to gain experience, learn new skills, and meet like-minded people in the field of community development. Plus, who doesn’t want to spend two weeks colouring in and blowing bubbles?

Favourite volunteering memory:

Touring regional school groups around the festival. A little bit of theatre, a little bit of circus, lots of art and craft – what a great way for kids to get to know their capital city.

Also special mention to The Chipolatas: Gentlemen of the Road, whose circus performances are truly AWESOME!

Name: Sarah Says Hi!

Sarah

A bit about myself:

I studied Arts at UWA and Arts Management at WAAPA and have always been interested in the arts in Perth. I have enjoyed working and volunteering both in Perth and overseas and am now the Community Cultural Development Manager at AWESOME Arts, which involves running an artist-in-residence program in regional Western Australia. In my spare time I love walking my dog at the park and catching up with my friends and family. UPDATE: As of January 2017 Sarah left her role at AWESOME and is now the Arts and Education Coordinator at Constable Care.

My Volunteer Role at AWESOME:

Festival Assistant and Front of House.

Reason for volunteering:

I had graduated university and was looking for some industry experience and networking. In 2013, after returning from traveling overseas I was job hunting, so couldn’t imagine spending my days better than having fun at a festival for kids!

Favourite volunteering memory:

I think it’s a tie between having a teddy bear’s picnic with children and their favourite toys during the show Bear With Me and helping children play robot soccer with large remote control cars in the Cultural Centre Amphitheatre.

Name:

Marina Markova

A bit about myself:Marina

I moved to Australia in 2015 from Vladivostok, Russia. I decided to move away from my previous occupation as a lawyer to a change of pace into Arts and Hospitality away from office work and into a more interactive field. I love to travel, love animals especially my cat, and meeting new people.

My Volunteer Role at AWESOME:

I was a Team Leader for the 2015 AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things

Reason for volunteering:

I like developing new skills and AWESOME was a great new experience which taught me a lot about events as well as being a lot of fun and meeting new friends.

Favourite volunteering memory:

Meeting and working with the unbelievably kind and smart team of volunteers. We had a lot of fun and I am keeping in touch with these new friends.

I also enjoyed working with children and helping them to engage with the arts, and helping them to interact with the broader world in which they live. They also had a lot of fun.

I am really looking forward to the 2016 AWESOME Festival
