Punmu Stories is a digital media program that reflects the stories, identity, history, landscape and culture of the Martu people from the Punmu and Kunawarritji communities in the Pilbara, in remote Western Australia.
Over three two-week residencies in 2008, digital media artist Mat de Koning worked with the young people of the Rawa Community School to create a 30-minute film entirely produced in the community. Mat and the young people used super 8 cameras, digital video cameras and stills cameras to capture documentary footage of their artistic process.
During the residencies, it became apparent that a group of emerging musicians in Punmu had their own stories to tell through music. By enlisting the help and support of sound engineer, Lenny Rudeburg, this project developed another dimension. The Punmu Lakeside Band is proudly featured on the soundtrack of Punmu Stories and with Lenny’s assistance, they recorded their first album.
Punmu Stories premiered to great acclaim at the 2008 AWESOME Festival, with many of the bright young artists in attendance.
What's Happening Now…
AWESOME is currently working with the Rawa Community School to develop an artist-in-residence contemporary dance program. AWESOME is also hoping to deliver the Punmu Stories program to surrounding communities in the Pilbara.
