Mid West steps out to some AWESOME sound
AWESOME’s Creative Challenge artists will today head out to the Mid West of Western Australia to begin two-week residencies with the young people at Mullewa and Morawa.
Creative Challenge lead dance artist Aimee Smith will partner with sound artist Nick Duff to lead dance and sound workshops in Mullewa.
Sound artist Bonnie Davies will work with dance artist Aisling Donovan to run similar workshops with young people in Morawa to explore their regional identity.
“While we are all working along the same broad principle of dance movement in conjunction with sound, we expect that every community, due to its unique make up, will explore different aspects and take the workshops into different directions,” said Aimee.
“The first residency was in Wiluna last month and the participants there were very into hip hop expression.
“The Mid West is a very different part of Western Australia so it will be interesting to see what themes emerge from these workshops,” added Aimee.
The Healthway Smarter than Smoking Creative Challenge is AWESOME’s year-round program celebrating the rich cultural and environmental diversity of regional Western Australia.
The 2007 program will see AWESOME send teams of two artists into 10 remote communities in the Goldfields (Wiluna, Leinster, Leonora, Laverton), Mid West (Mullewa, Morawa) and Gascoyne (Shark Bay, Exmouth, Mungullah, Gascoyne Junction).
Each community will be recognised and celebrated at the 2007 AWESOME Festival in Perth where all the individual dance works will be brought together and presented as a large compilation work.
AWESOME Arts Australia works to inspire and encourage creativity among young people. It has a year-round presence throughout WA with diverse community cultural development programs and hosts an annual international festival. The 2007 festival runs from 16 - 25 November.
