Creative Challenge

Creative Challenge is AWESOME’s year round program celebrating the bright young things living in regional and remote Western Australia.

Each year, a team of artists present arts projects that encourage young people to consider their individual and collective community identity by exploring their own history, stories and environment. Artists take residence in regional or remote communities as an Artist in Residence and work with a specific group of children over a one or two week period. The program focuses on process-driven workshops, and involves the participants in undertaking research, conceptual development and implementation of an artwork that will communicate the uniqueness of their community. A selection of the works from these residencies will be showcased in the Creative Challenge Exhibition in the Perth Cultural Centre.

The aim of the Creative Challenge is to celebrate the talents, perceptions and stories of young people in regional and remote Western Australia and to instil a sense of pride, ownership and place within the communities.

If your school or community group would like to know more about the Creative Challenge please contact AWESOME’s Community Cultural Development Manager, Miranda Stephens, on 9328 9666 or ccd@awesomearts.com

The 2017 theme I Hear You is about celebrating and hearing the voices of young people and encouraging them to listen to others around them. This theme is centered around creating and building empathy in children, helping them work together, and responding to one another with consideration.

Through this theme, Creative Challenge aims to cultivate the act of listening to others and present the sharing of ideas, opinions and concerns through art. These ideas have a wide field of reference, enabling and encouraging children to explore a variety of places and/or ideas that are central to their wellbeing and particularly the wellbeing of those around them. The interpretation can be literal listening to one another or metaphorical listening through empathy and compassion.

In 2017 Creative Challenge will visit 19 communities Port Hedland, Newman, Rockingham, Leonora, Kalgoorlie, Wiluna and Onslow supported by our Principal Partner, BHP Billiton, and Coolgardie, Bunbury, Gascoyne Junction, Kalbarri, Mt Magnet, South Hedland, and Punmu/Kunawarritji Presented by Go for 2&5
