                                                                              Kalgoorlie...where food becomes ART!

AWESOME’s regional program Creative Challenge kicked off yesterday with ‘Feast,’ a food art project for young people in Kalgoorlie supported by BHP Billiton Nickel West.

Creative Challenge uses arts projects to encourage young people to explore their identity, build skills and express what is unique about their community. Each project is a two-week residency and the works that are created in every community celebrated in a local exhibition and in Perth.

Leading food artist, Bridget Waters will facilitate workshops alongside artist Minaxi May in which the young people of North Kalgoorlie Primary School will create stunning sculptures out of food materials and recycled or found objects from within the community and it’s surrounds. For the second year running, North Kalgoorlie Primary School, located in the Nickel West Community will experience an exciting creative difference to the school curriculum through the support of the AWESOME/BHP Billiton Nickel West Partnership.

“Food art is about using food to challenge and provoke, not one, but all five senses,” said Bridget.

“The idea of transforming food materials into artwork is especially appealing to young people.”

The 2008 Creative Challenge ‘Feast’ project will visit 10 remote communities in the Goldfields (Kalgoorlie, Wiluna and Leonora) supported by BHP Billiton Nickel West, Mid West (Mullewa, Morawa and Pia Wadjarri), Kimberley (Derby & Jarlmadangah Community), Gascoyne (Carnarvon), Wheatbelt (Lake Grace) and Metropolitan Perth (Medina Primary).

Kalgoorlie’s culinary creations can be viewed at a final community celebration on 13th June at North Kalgoorlie Primary School. These artworks will showcase an exploration of community, environment, family and history of the young people of Kalgoorlie.

Each community’s artworks will be celebrated in an installation at the 2008 AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things in Perth, running from 16-23 November 2008.

AWESOME works to inspire and encourage creativity amongst young people in Western Australia.
