AWESOME artists at ‘play’ in Joondalup

Award-winning Victorian animation artist Dave Jones began his latest animation project in Perth yesterday, entitled ‘Play,’ supported by the City of Joondalup.

The project will see young and old participate in a series of workshops to create a collaborative animation entitled Play. This film will be featured in November at the AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things.

Dave will interview and record the senior citizens of Joondalup, discussing how they used to play as children. AWESOME has gathered a broad array of enthusiastic Joondalup seniors who are already cooking up some great yarns to be included in the film.

Students from Hillarys Pre-primary will listen to the seniors’ stories and create their own illustrations of them. These illustrations will be converted into animations by Dave Jones to make a film.

The final work is a collaborative film featuring the seniors’ voices telling the stories alongside the animated illustrations of the young students.

‘This project is a great example of how the process of storytelling can bridge generations and build goodwill within a community. Play has generated a lot of excitement and we are thrilled that the City of Joondalup has got behind a project that will ultimately take local stories and proudly showcase them to the world in an international arts festival.’
Carol Brearley, Program Director – AWESOME Arts.

The creativity of the young and old people of the Joondalup and Hillarys communities will be celebrated with daily screenings of ‘Play’ at the AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things in November this year.

AWESOME works to inspire and encourage creativity amongst young people and aims to be a catalyst in developing creative, open-minded, young Western Australians who are engaged with the world.
